With two single, adult children, I really identify with the problems they face finding a church home. When you don’t really feel comfortable in a church, you are not going to continue going. When they were young & lived at home, we went to church so they went to church. They made friends in the church with other kids their age. After leaving for college, it was a whole new “ball game”. If the young adults are married, it makes it easier for them to come. They have each other. Or if they have kids, they gravitate towards other young couples through their kids. I think Dorchester is doing some things to encourage the young adults to attend and feel a part of the church such as our monthly brunches – but have any of us looked around to see if there are any people we don’t know so well & choose to sit with them to get to know them better? I think the Hot Topics Sunday school class is another great opportunity for the youth and/or young adults at church to attend & discuss some of the issues. Why aren’t more of them interested though? We had 3 youth this past Sunday & 1 the Sunday before. I don’t recall any younger couples at all. What can we do to encourage them to come? I would really like to hear what they have to say on the issues we have been discussing. I think the Dorchester Serves Day will be an excellent opportunity to involve all ages on a common cause of volunteering at different venues. I have read through the first chapter & can see a lot of the same problems I have been hearing from our daughter, Amanda, as she tries to find a church that she feels connected with in Rock Hill.
